Kids and Substance Abuse

Arm your kids against substance abuse.

What you can do…

  • Set a good example.
  • Arm ourselves with the facts.
  • Get involved in your child’s activities. Know their friends and their whereabouts.
  • Create clean, consistent rules and enforce them.
  • Talk with your child early and often about drugs.
  • Discuss the consequences of drug use.
  • Show your child that you love them; and tell them often.
  • Teach your child to respect themselves and their decisions.

A note to teens…things you can do to combat drugs.

  • Realize that you are important - No one else is make like you. You have a unique set of abilities and talents that are valuable to others.
  • Take responsibility for your own actions - You can say no to alcohol and other drug abuse. To help resist peer pressure, educate yourself. Be ready to give a simple answer like, “No, thank you,” and walk away from anyone asking you to drink or use other drugs. Get involved in positive activities. Make new friends if your old friends start drinking or taking drugs. Remember, a real friend is someone who will help you be the best you can be…DRUG-FREE!
  • Understand that you are not responsible for the behavior of your parents - It is okay to feel angry, frustrated, embarrassed or confused by your parents’ abuse of alcohol or other drugs. Ask a trusted adult such as a teacher, family friend, or law enforcement officer for ways to get help.
  • Seek help if you currently abuse alcohol or drugs - There is hope for change. Many people overcome alcoholism and drug addiction. Life is too precious to waste on alcohol or drugs.
  • Get the facts right - One 12 ounce beer has as much as a 1.5 ounce shout of whiskey or a 5 ounce glass of wine.
  • Be a real friend - If you know someone with a drinking problem, be part of the solution. Urge your friend to get help.
